The Case for Action
HPI's Sustainable Health Systems Flagship Project Team is proud to announce CASCADES, a national project aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions linked to health care and to create a low-carbon, climate-sustainable health system.
Funded by Environment and Climate Change Canada, and in partnership with various academic institutions across the country, CASCADES is actively working to empower the implementation of sustainable healthcare practices and policies in Canada.
How Healthcare Contributes to Climate Change
Climate change and other environmental challenges are critical threats to human health. Due to unsustainable practices, our healthcare system actually contributes to this problem. With large physical facilities that operate 24-7, care arrangements that foster substantial travel by patients and care-providers, and a profound reliance on polluting technologies and other products (drugs, devices, disposables, etc.), health systems are significant contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, air pollution and broader environmental impacts.

Our Flagship Project
This project supports health professionals and systems to transition to high quality, low carbon, climate resilient care through training and implementation support. A major focus of this flagship is its involvement as a partner on CASCADES, a cross-provincial collaboration funded by Environment and Climate Change Canada.
